The Side Effects of Lip Filler
Side effects are common, here’s how to deal with them.
Treatment with lip filler is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments available. Patients of all ages and goals seek lip enhancement, whether it is to add more volume, decrease fine lines, or improve asymmetry. However, it is important to know that the lips are a highly sensitive area to treat and require a high level of precision to inject the filler effectively. Even then, side effects can arise, so we want to provide you with our tips on how to manage them.
Swelling
It is normal for the lips to appear very swollen after lip injections. Be patient! This can take 7-10 days to fully resolve depending on what product was used, and your level of sensitivity. We recommend applying cold compresses and sleeping with your head elevated to help reduce swelling.
Bruising
If you know that you are someone who bruises easily, we recommend taking arnica supplements at least 1 day before your lip filler appointment and continuing for a few days after treatment. This can help prevent the onset and duration of bruising. Avoiding medications such as Advil, Aleve, aspirin, motrin, Vitamin E and fish oil at least 5 days prior to lip injections will also be important to help prevent bleeding and bruising.
Pain or Discomfort
Mild pain is a normal side effect after lip filler, and taking any over-the-counter pain medication such as Tylenol will help to reduce the discomfort. This should go away over the next 24-48 hours after treatment.
Post-Procedure Care
After your lip filler procedure, it is crucial to follow a few steps to ensure a smooth recovery and lasting results.
- Stay hydrated: drink plenty of water to keep your skin and lips hydrated. Avoid alcohol within the first 24-48 hours, which may lead to more bruising and swelling.
- Be gentle: avoid touching or pressing on your lips, and don’t apply lipstick for a day or two.
- Avoid strenuous activity: skip intense workouts and activities that can increase blood flow to the face for at least 24 hours.
- Follow up: schedule a routine follow-up appointment with your provider in 4-6 weeks for any adjustments or additional care.
