How Does a Photofacial Work?
Photofacials are typically performed using an IPL device, which uses wideband light to remove pigmented skin cells. However, IPL is a non-specific energy that heats the cells within the skin to break down pigment. At our luxury medspas in NYC, our licensed providers prefer to use a more customized and targeted approach for our procedures, and therefore prefer laser technology for Photofacials.
We use an advanced laser technology system called the Chrome, which includes both 1064nm and 532nm wavelengths. These are both Q-switched lasers, which deliver high-intensity, short-duration pulses of light energy to target specific pigments in the skin. They are particularly effective in treating pigmented lesions such as brown spots, age spots, freckles, and certain types of tattoos.
The 1064nm wavelength is highly absorbed by melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of our skin, hair and brown spots. When this laser light is directed onto a brown spot, the melanin selectively absorbs the laser energy. This energy is then converted into heat, which causes the melanin particles to fragment into smaller pieces. The body’s immune system then starts the process of clearing them away, and over time the brown spot fades, becoming lighter and less noticeable.
The 532nm wavelength is also absorbed by melanin and certain red and brown pigments in the skin. The mechanism of action is similar to that of the 1064nm laser to remove different pigmented spots on the body.
What Our Patients Say
view moreBenefits of Photofacials
Q-switched lasers are highly precise, targeting only the pigmented area while leaving surrounding skin largely unaffected. This procedure also causes minimal discomfort and can be adjusted to different settings, making them suitable for a range of skin types. We see patients of all ages having Photofacials done due to their minimal risks and maximum benefits.
Younger patients may choose Photofacials as a preventive measure to maintain their skin’s health and delay the onset of common skin issues such as sun spots, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. Photofacials also promote collagen production, leading to healthier and more resilient skin over time. Even at a young age, individuals can have minor sun damage and textural issues. Photofacials target these irregularities effectively, resulting in smoother, clearer and a more even complexion.
Pricing
The price of a photofacial treatment depends on what area is being treated and how much is done. The typical starting price is $500 per treatment.
Frequency
The amount of photofacial treatments a patient needs depends on the level of pigment and desired outcome. We recommend starting with a series of 3 treatments spaced out 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results.
