How Does Sculptra Work?

Sculptra is a type of filler that works by stimulating collagen production. We start to naturally lose collagen as we get older, which is a process that begins in our mid-20’s, when we lose about 1% per year. Collagen is an essential protein within the body responsible for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. Decreased amounts can lead to visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines and skin laxity.

Sculptra is powered by poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which addresses these signs of aging by triggering the body’s own collagen production. PLLA is a biocompatible substance that has been used for many years in the field of medicine, including dissolvable stitches. Once injected, Sculptra starts working within the skin’s deeper layers, and PLLA particles act as a scaffold that encourages collagen production.

Over time, the body responds to these new collagen fibers and is the time when you begin to notice improvements in the areas that were treated. This approach causes the skin to rebuild its foundation, resulting in a youthful, revitalized appearance.

One way that Sculptra differs from hyaluronic acid fillers is that it improves lost volume over time as collagen rebuilds, whereas HA fillers show results immediately. Sculptra also helps to improve skin quality by smoothing out the skin and boosting radiance. Results can last for up to two years or more, setting it apart from many other anti-aging treatments.

Frequency

Sculptra is typically injected over several treatment sessions due to its gradual results. The number of sessions needed depends on a patient’s age and desired outcome. Younger patients that are having Sculptra done for preventative reasons may only require 1-2 treatments. Whereas those that are older and have more advanced signs of aging may need 3-4 sessions. Each treatment is spaced out 4-6 weeks apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during a Sculptra appointment?

Every Sculptra appointment begins with a thorough consultation to address your goals and individual concerns. Your licensed medical provider will discuss all available options so you can decide which one is most suitable for your needs. Sculptra is injected by licensed physician assistants or our board certified plastic surgeon. Each syringe of Sculptra includes a small amount of lidocaine which ensures you do not feel any pain throughout the procedure.Sculptra is injected with a blunt-tipped cannula which we prefer to use for safety reasons and to prevent any pain caused by needles. Once treatment is complete, we massage the area for 5 minutes. This should be repeated 5 times a day for 5 days, which your provider will go over with you in detail.

Will Sculptra make me look fake?

Sculptra is a type of facial filler that works gradually to restore volume and result in a more youthful appearance. Since it does not have immediate results, the overall impact on facial rejuvenation is subtle and natural.

How should I prepare for my Sculptra appointment?

We kindly ask that you avoid aspirin, Vitamin E, fish oil, ibuprofen, Aleve and Motrin at least 1 week prior to your scheduled appointment. You may take Arnica supplements 1-2 days prior to your procedure which may help minimize the risk of bruising.

What should I expect after a Sculptra treatment?

You may notice that your face appears fuller after a Sculptra treatment. This is because Sculptra is injected as a liquid so it fills the face immediately, which will subside over the next 24-48 hours. Several days after the treatment your face returns to normal, and collagen production begins. This process takes some time and maximum results may not be seen until 4-6 weeks after treatment. You may also require additional treatment sessions to see a noticeable change. However, the wait is worth it!

Is Sculptra better than hyaluronic acid?

There are several different types of filler that are used for anti-aging treatments. Two of the most common include biostimulatory and hyaluronic acid fillers. HA fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and RHA are all made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance within the body. This draws in water to plump the skin, restore lost volume and provide hydration to areas that need it most. Results from HA filler are immediate and noticeable right away. Sculptra is a biostimulatory filler, meaning it promotes the body's own collagen production. This helps to combat signs of aging that are caused by a lack of collagen such as wrinkles, skin laxity and decreased elasticity. Collagen is also responsible for the quality of our skin, which Sculptra can also improve, even resulting in a visible glow. There are benefits to using both HA fillers and Sculptra. We gladly offer both types and are happy to discuss which one (or both) will best suit your needs!
